Coaching helps people achieve ambitions that are currently eluding them.
It’s done through a series of insightful and creative conversations with a laser-guided focus on enabling and encouraging people to let go of habitual behaviours by thinking and acting in new ways.
Can’t we just figure this stuff out for ourselves?
Have a go at this....
Fold your arms. Unfold them. Now fold them the other way round.
Feels weird doesn’t it?
We are creatures of habit and have been folding our arms in the same way all our lives. When asked to do it in a different way our brain has to disengage automatic pilot mode and learn the new operation. After a while, and a lot of practice, the new way will feel just as natural as the old way.
Our brains seek to automate everything we do using it’s subconscious supercomputer. This frees our brains up for more strategic, higher-level thinking rather than having to consciously think about everything we do. Standing up would take hours! Hurrah for our ability to hard-wire processes we cry…
…well not always. Our neural shortcutting makes us creatures of habit and sometimes our habits don’t serve us very well. My exam revision regime as an 18 year old is a classic example. Every time I sat down to revise I felt bored and pressured so I ran my well-versed routine (which got me A grades in previous exams) of tidying up or playing football with my mates. Unfortunately for me these exams were much harder than previous ones and I underachieved massively.
Fortunately at University I changed my approach with the help of a more focussed outlook and a great friend who inspired me with creative revision techniques. I passed with flying colours.
The latest neurological research suggests it takes us between 21 and 28 days to form new habits. New neural connections are like young seedlings - they need lots of attention and repetition in order to take root and grow stronger than the existing habits. Coaching ensures the focus of attention and regular action so new ways of doing things can take root and progress can be tracked and celebrated.
